About The Role

The Distinguished AI Engineer at Capital One plays a pivotal role in advancing the company’s AI and machine learning initiatives. This position involves designing, developing, and deploying sophisticated AI systems that drive innovation across the organization. As part of the Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers—to create scalable, responsible, and high-performance AI solutions. Your work will directly impact how Capital One serves its customers and supports its internal operations by integrating state-of-the-art large language models, foundation models, and other AI technologies into real-world banking applications. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead technical innovation, influence the long-term AI strategy, and contribute to building responsible AI infrastructure that aligns with the company's mission of changing banking for good.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical foundation and a passion for innovation in AI. Candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of 8 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies. Alternatively, a master’s degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience is acceptable. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Scala, or Java is essential, with at least 8 years of hands-on experience. Preferred qualifications include extensive experience deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, and a proven track record of leading and mentoring engineering teams. Experience with AI system architecture, developing and optimizing large language models, similarity search, VectorDBs, and AI governance frameworks is highly desirable. Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate complex AI concepts to diverse audiences are also important.

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross-functional teams to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer experience and operational efficiency.
• Design, develop, test, and support AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, and observability frameworks.
• Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Nemo Guardrails, PyTorch, and others to build scalable AI solutions.
• Invent and implement state-of-the-art optimization techniques for large-scale AI systems to improve performance metrics such as latency, throughput, cost-efficiency, and scalability.
• Contribute to the technical vision and strategic roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One, ensuring alignment with business goals and ethical standards.
• Mentor junior engineers and influence technical decision-making across teams, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
• Stay abreast of the latest research and emerging trends in AI and machine learning, applying new techniques judiciously in production environments.
