About The Role
The Senior Distinguished Engineer, AI Compute role at Capital One is a strategic and technical leadership position responsible for designing, developing, and scaling foundational AI compute infrastructure. This remote-eligible position offers an exciting opportunity to influence the core systems that power large-scale AI and machine learning workloads across the organization. The successful candidate will be a hands-on technical leader with deep expertise in distributed systems, cloud computing, and high-performance computing architectures. Your primary focus will be on building and optimizing compute platforms on CPU and GPU substrates, supporting a range of AI applications from model training and inference to data processing and generative AI. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, guide technical projects, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of Capital One’s AI infrastructure, ensuring operational excellence, security, and scalability.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields plus at least 10 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies, or
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields plus at least 8 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies
- Minimum of 10 years of programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, or Java
Responsibilities
- Architect and develop control and data plane implementations to realize a highly available, multi-tenant, large-scale, and secure machine learning platform
- Design and implement distributed compute engine solutions using Ray and Spark to accelerate diverse workloads, including LLM pre-training, reinforcement learning, and large-scale data processing, while optimizing compute efficiency
- Lead systemic improvements for operational excellence by automating routine workflows and maintenance tasks
- Manage the technical execution of multiple projects, collaborating with developers working on distributed microservices and large foundation models
- Partner with product and program management teams, as well as stakeholders across Capital One, to align technical solutions with business goals
- Stay current with technological trends, experiment with new tools and frameworks, and participate in internal and external technology communities
- Lead system design and code review sessions, promoting best practices and high standards within the engineering team
- Mentor internal talent and actively participate in recruiting efforts to build a strong, innovative engineering community
